The choice between electric vehicles (EVs) and petrol cars depends on how you prioritise running costs, convenience, technology, and everyday driving comfort.
EVs can offer lower and more predictable running costs, supported by Singapore’s growing push towards cleaner energy vehicles.
Petrol cars remain convenient for drivers who value quick refuelling and minimal changes to their existing driving routine.
Singapore’s expanding EV charging network is making electric driving more practical for daily commutes, errands, and weekend plans.
Car rentals and leasing in Singapore offer a flexible way to experience an EV before committing to long-term ownership, especially as your needs and driving habits evolve.
As Singapore moves towards its goal of achieving 100% cleaner energy vehicles by 2040, electric cars are becoming an increasingly common sight on local roads. For drivers, this has made the debate between EVs and petrol cars more relevant than ever.
Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or planning weekend drives, both types of cars offer distinct advantages. Below, we take a closer look at how they compare to help you determine which option best suits your lifestyle and driving needs.
Cost is one of the most important considerations when choosing between electric and petrol vehicles.
Factor | EVs | Petrol Cars |
Upfront Cost | Typically higher | Typically lower |
Running Costs (June 2026) | Tends to be cheaper and more stable Electricity tariff: 29.72 cents/kWh with GST | More affected by fuel price fluctuations Shell FuelSave 95: S$3.46/litre |
Incentives | EEAI and VES rebates are available for eligible EVs | Limited incentive support |
At first glance, EVs still tend to have a higher upfront cost than comparable petrol cars, largely due to battery technology and newer vehicle systems. However, the gap is narrowing as more EV models enter the market and government rebates continue to offset part of the purchase cost.
For fully electric cars registered in 2026, the Electric Vehicle Early Adoption Incentive (EEAI) provides a 45% rebate off the Additional Registration Fee (ARF), capped at S$7,500.
Eligible EVs in the cleanest Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) band can also receive up to S$22,500 in rebates.
Together, these can provide combined savings of up to S$30,000 off the ARF for qualifying electric cars registered in 2026.
Petrol cars are more directly affected by global oil prices, supply conditions, refining costs, and exchange rate fluctuations. This can make fuel expenses less predictable, especially for drivers who commute daily or cover higher mileage. EVs run on electricity, which is priced differently.
For a more realistic comparison, let’s look at the estimated cost of driving 100km.
The BMW iX1 eDrive20 has an estimated energy consumption of around 16.9–18.1 kWh/100km. Based on the regulated electricity tariff of 29.72 cents/kWh with GST from April to June 2026, this would cost about S$5.02–$5.38 per 100km.
By comparison, the BMW X1 sDrive16i has an estimated fuel consumption of 6.8 L/100 km. Based on Shell FuelSave’s 95 petrol rate of S$3.46/litre, this would cost about S$23.53 per 100km.
Actual costs will vary depending on driving habits, traffic conditions, charging provider rates, petrol discounts, and vehicle load. However, this like-for-like comparison shows why EVs can be more cost-efficient for daily driving in Singapore.
Convenience is another key consideration. Petrol vehicles continue to offer the familiarity of quick refuelling at stations located across Singapore, making them easy to use with little planning required.
For EVs, access to charging was once seen as a major barrier. However, that concern is becoming less significant as Singapore aims to install 60,000 EV charging points across the island by 2030. Today, charging points can be found in many residential estates, office buildings, shopping centres, and public car parks, making it easier for drivers to charge while they work, shop, or go about their day.
Petrol cars are by no means lacking in technology, particularly in newer models. However, many EVs are positioned as the latest generation of vehicles. They are often designed with newer technologies and systems, with many models featuring large digital displays, advanced driver assistance systems, smartphone integration, and over-the-air software updates. Some EVs can even receive new features and performance improvements through software updates, keeping the driving experience as modern and up-to-date as possible.
If most of your time behind the wheel is spent travelling between home, work, the gym, and weekend meetups, an EV can make everyday driving feel more effortless. Quiet cabins, smooth acceleration, and lower running costs are particularly appealing when you're navigating Singapore's daily traffic.
Some drivers value the freedom to simply get in and go. If your plans often change at the last minute or you regularly find yourself making spontaneous trips across the island, a petrol car offers the familiarity and convenience of quick refuelling whenever the need arises.
Many drivers are curious about electric vehicles but are not ready to commit fully. In these situations, car rentals and leasing can be a practical way to experience both EVs and petrol cars firsthand before deciding which better suits your lifestyle.

Owning a car in Singapore often involves a significant initial outlay, especially with COE costs. Leasing an EV reduces this barrier by allowing you to experience electric driving through a more manageable arrangement, rather than committing to ownership from the start. Shorter-term car rental arrangements are also available, giving you the flexibility to experience an EV for a few days, weeks, or months before deciding whether it fits your lifestyle.
Your driving habits may change over time. You might move closer to work, start a family, or gain access to charging facilities that make an EV more practical than before. Leasing provides the flexibility to reassess your vehicle choice at the end of the lease term, rather than being locked into a single model for the next few years.
Choosing the right provider matters here. At Eurokars Leasing, we offer a range of EV models, such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric, IM5 EV Luxury, BMW iX1 eDrive20i, and more. Whether you are looking for a refined daily drive, a spacious option for growing needs, or a more technology-led experience, this variety makes it easier to find a vehicle that suits your current needs.
Leasing typically involves fixed monthly payments, making it easier to plan your transport budget. Depending on the package, costs such as servicing, maintenance, and insurance may also be included, reducing the likelihood of unexpected vehicle-related expenses.
The choice between an electric and a petrol vehicle is ultimately about the kind of driving experience you want to make part of your everyday life. Whether you are drawn to the quiet confidence of electric driving or the familiar ease of a petrol car, the best option is one that supports your routines, opens up new possibilities, and gives you the freedom to move through Singapore with ease.
At Eurokars Leasing, flexible EV car rental and leasing solutions make it easier to explore what works for you without the weight of long-term ownership. With thoughtful service, insurance packages for peace of mind, and a fleet designed for modern drivers, every journey can feel more considered and more in tune with the way you live.
